The death penalty against three Ahwazi activists
Three Ahwazi Arab political activists, who were born in Hamidiyeh in West Al-Ahwaz have sentenced to the death penalty by the Iranian revolutionary court in Ahwaz city around 20th March 2016, according to the reliable sources inside Al-Ahwaz. Those men were forcibly arrested by the Iranian intelligence services in April 2015 in Hamidiyeh city on the charge of enmity of god, corruption on the earth, dangerous for national security, and having connection with terrorism. The name of these men, who have sentenced to the death penalty by the revolutionary court; Mr. Qis Dasher Saleh Obidawi and his brother Mr. Ahmad Dasher Saleh Obidawi, and their cousin Mr. Sajad Hamid Saleh Obidawi. In addition, Mr. Mohammad Helfi 25 years of age and Mr. Mehdi Abbas Alzayer Sayahi, both have sentenced to 35 years life imprisonment in Yazd, also Mr. Mehdi Moarebi and Mr. Ali Hassan Saleh Obidawi, both have sentenced to 25 years life imprisonment. All these men were born in the city of Hamidiyeh in west Ahwaz, the capital city of Al-Ahwaz. According to the reliable sources, all these men have been holding at the secret detention that is belong to the Iranian intelligence services since they were arrested in April 2015. The reliable sources confirmed that all these men were severely tortured such as physical and psychological torture by the Iranian intelligence services without accessing a lawyer or having connection with their families. The Ahwazi Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights strongly condemned the Iranian ill-treatments against these men. The Ahwazi Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights demand the International Human Rights Organisations and International Community in general and Dr. Ahmad Shaheed, the Special Rapporteur of Human Rights for Iran in particular, to pay more attention for the case of those men, who were recently sentenced to the death penalty and long life imprisonment by the Iranian revolutionary court. The Ahwazi Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights would like to add that none of these men have faced a fair trial and lawyer. The organisation is also confirmed that all these men were forced confessions under torture, which is a violation of human rights against detainees. The organisation also would like to bring attention of the International Organisations that the Iranian authorities have already executed a considerable number of Ahwazi cultural and political activists without giving them a chance of accessing their families and lawyers and facing standard court. The organisation also would like to remind the international organisations that the UN Conventions offer treaty provision relating to the death penalty such as Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to limit the death penalty and prohibited against activists.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Ahwaz is an Arab land that located in the South- West and South Iran. The name of Al-Ahwaz has changed to Khuzestan, Bushehr and Hormozgan in 1935 after invading the land in 1925. The Iranian both regimes such as Pahlavi era and Islamic republic era used different ways to suppress Ahwazi voices. A considerable number of Ahwazi have been sentenced to the death penalty due to their activity, although Article 6 of ICCPR pointed out that the death penalty should not carried out against people who have not faces a fair trial. Article 6 of the ICCPR also states that there are a number of strict limitation on the imposition of the death penalty, including ”Right to a fair trial before the imposition of the death penalty; prohibition against imposing the death penalty when other ICCPR rights have been violated; right to seek pardon or commutation of a death penalty sentence”.
