An Ahwazi Arab man died due to setting himself on fire (Self-Immolation)
An Ahwazi Arab, Omid Rashedi, a 36 year-old, was born in Khalafia in south Al-Ahwaz, burned himself on 23rd September 2015 inside ”Production and Service Trade Union” in Khalafia. He later on 24th September, exactly 12 hours after burning himself, died due to severe burns, the reliable sources informed to the Ahwazi organisation for the Defence of Human Rights that 80% of Omid’s body was burned.
According to the sources in Al-Ahwaz, Omid Rashedi was working for ”Production and Service Trade Union” for exactly two years. Omid later realised that there are money laundering, corruption in administration, and financial crime including competition and cartel offences all was running under the knowledge of the manager of ”Production and Service Trade Union”. The reliable sources also informed that Omid Rashedi obtained documents proving the involvement of the manager of the Union with the corruption.
The sources added that Omid Rashedi later lost his job when he informed to the Supreme authorities about the financial crime and corruption on the Union. He struggled to return back to his job. However, he faced ignorance by the Union several times. Therefore, he decided to burn himself inside the Union, in which 80% of his body was burned, and then died due to severe burning.
The Ahwazi Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights strongly condemned the Iranian ill-treatments against Ahwazi Arab people in general and Omid Rashedi in particular. The Ahwazi Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights demand the International Human Rights Organisations and International Community in general and Dr. Ahmad Shaheed, the Special Rapporteur of Human Rights for Iran in particular, to pay more attention for the case of Omid Rashedi and also put Iran under pressure to stop its ill-treatments policy in increasing poverty, homelessness, and unemployment in Ahwaz.
Ahwaz is an Arab land that located in the South- West and South Iran. The name of Al-Ahwaz has changed to Khuzestan, Bushehr and Hormozgan in 1935 after invading the land in 1925. The Iranian both regimes such as Pahlavi era and Islamic republic era used different ways to suppress Ahwazi voices.
Omid Rashedi, the son of Abdol Rashedi, was married and had two kids. He started to work for ”Production and Service Trade Union” in 2013. He then lost his job when he informed the high authorities about the financial crime in the Union.
Omid Rashedi is a relative of Mr. Hadi Rashedi, who was executed by the Iranian intelligence services in January 2014 in the secret detention. The Special Rapporteur of human rights for Iran, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the British Foreign Minister and other International and national human rights organisations were strongly condemned the death penalty of Mr. Hadi Rashedi alongside Mr. Hashem Shabani.
