26 Sep 2018

Ladies and gentlemen, As I address you today, I would like to shed light on the violation perpetrated against the rights of Ahwazi women and children in Iran. Gender inequality in Iran in general, and in Ahwaz in particular, remains a serious problem, leaving women and girls in a poor standard of living and vulnerable to constant abuse and violation of their rights. The applicable laws in Iran do not provide them with the proper protection. Still, the Iranian state is reluctant to ratify the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women [1] and to recognise th

Protests are the Ahwazis’ last resort as grievances deepen

25 Sep 2018

Ahwaz is a land where war between Iran and Iraq took place and ended more than 30 years ago. However, the face of war-torn cities is still present especially in Mohammarah city where the right to development has been denied to local Arabs. This comes despite the fact that the area contains huge resources of oil, gas and water. People in Ahwaz are suffering from deprivation in all aspect of life. Yet the resources located beneath and above land are used discriminatorily to benefit mainly the central cities in Iran. The violations of the fundamental rights and freedoms in Ahwaz are so enormous

20 Sep 2018

About 400,000 people from north of Ahwaz immigrated to northern cities of Iran over the past few years according to Mrs. Parvaneh Salahshor, a member of Iran’s Parliament. She explained that mismanagement is the cause of environmental problems in Ahwaz. They contribute to mass exodus of people. The current displacement from the Ahwazi land is expected to continue. It will lead to changing the demographic makeup of the area in a way that harms the Arab population. [1] The unhealthy water, dust and polluted air, excessive heat, unfavourable climatic conditions, unemployment, poverty and inflati

Drought and fires are killing the Ahwazi marshlands

08 Sep 2018

The recent air pollution caused by the burning of Alazim Marshland has affected most of the cities and people in Ahwaz. Alazim Marshland has been catching fire for weeks due to the water shortage. It is caused by construction of dams on Karkheh River as the main source of the water for this vast area of wetland. As a result of high temperature in Ahwaz, the dried marshes are easily enflamed. Although, there are claims that the Iranian authority are behind these fires to put more pressure on Ahwazi people and to force them leave their land and migrate to other parts of Iran. 18 Aug 2018

The arbitrary arrests made by the intelligence services of the Iranian regime have become a commonplace. They are carried out against Ahwazi people, with the intention of damaging the mainstay of society. Also, they are used to intimidate and terrorise others for them not to participate in any activity or protest. The Iranian authorities fear the rising awareness among Ahwazis about their human rights. Also, they are terrified from independent cultural activities in Ahwaz including the modest campaign about identity and linguistic rights. On 15 July 2018, Mr Reza Moramadi was arrested by

Suicide is surging in Ahwaz amid rampant poverty

11 Aug 2018

The cause of poverty in Iran cannot be seen as only an economic issue. There is also a legal one since the distribution of income and opportunity is related to the legal system and the practice of the state in this regard. The discriminatory practice when it comes to sharing the country’s wealth among different ethnics in Iran aggravates poverty and causes widespread marginalisation particularly in Ahwaz. According to the contemporary international law, Iran is obligated to prevent the poverty gap among all citizens and to reduce the negative impacts of poverty on the population especially t
