AlKaabi reveals the tragic conditions of the people of Al-Ahwaz in Geneva

Hakim AlKaabi, head of the Ahwaz Organization for the Defence of Human Rights, revealed the tragic conditions of the Ahwazi people during the 44th session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

AlKaabi emphasized that the Ahwazi Organization for the Defence of Human Rights monitored the unprecedented high levels of poverty in Ahwaz, pointing out that it has become a problem that affects Ahwazi inside the country and is the most dangerous one based on the official figures issued by the Iranian authorities themselves.

The head of the Ahwazi Organization for the Defence of Human Rights said that Ahwaz is ranked third in Iran in terms of the shanty population, which is estimated at one million people, stressing that it has become a marginalized region suffering a difficult situation due to government neglect and the lack of reconstruction of cities and villages that were destroyed during the Iran-Iraq war.

He pointed out that more than 50% of this demography lives below the poverty line, and about 10 thousand street vendors spread in the local markets in Ahwaz, not covered by insurance.

He further shed light on the suffering of Ahwazi farmers whose crops were destroyed by contrived torrents, which resulted in heavy losses, pointing at the same time to the tragedy of municipal workers and companies such as Seven Hills (Haft Tabah) who are not receiving their salaries.

AlKaabi addressed the Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, saying: “Many Ahwazi citizens have lost hope in life”, pointing out that the official figures of the Iranian authorities indicate that suicides resulting from poverty in Ahwaz range between 5 and 6 people Weekly, where the unemployment rate exceeds 50 percent.

The head of the Ahwazi Organization for the Defence of Human Rights stressed that the situation inside Ahwaz needs a comprehensive review, with the economic situation worsening due to Corona, so that matters do not go out of control and what happens cannot be without its consequences.

At the end of his speech, AlKaabi asked the Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights to consider these matters in preparing his report on extreme poverty in Ahwaz.
